We’re only a couple of years away, but Sony has done the unthinkable.  They have a created a hologram like those that you see in Star Wars and the like.  Called the Raymodeler (a prototype), this device is able to show full 3D without the need of glasses.  Granted the viewing area is small, but it really works.  Walk around the back and you’ll see the back of the person.  Granted they used 8 or more camera to do this, but it’s way better than what we have today.  Now if one was to do CG, they’d have to do so many renders that it would take forever to create.  You can see in the video that they have at 15 views to create the 3d.  They showed this thing off at Siggraph, but it didn’t seem like a lot of people were interested.  Weird.  Gotta say a lot of things we see in scifi movies are actually coming to life. Check out the video below to be amazed.

The Cup

It’s good to see a small group create a very good short.  Created by 6 students from Pepe School Land,  3 full time and 3 part time, this short is about a coach who wants to win a championship.  The only problem is they are not very good.  Looking at the trophy and then looking at the score, the coach quickly loses hope.  Add that one of his players gets injured, he has no choice but to let his bench warmer who loves donuts play.  So do they lose the game or not?  Find out below.  If you’re wondering, this was all done with the alpha software of Blender 2.50.

So the Comic Con has just ended.  You also so know, it’s not just about comics anymore.  Why even bother calling it “Comic” Con.  Just call it the San Diego Con or something.  Anyways, they previewed a really good trailer for the game DC Universe Online.  Who ever did this, mad props.  Who would of thought, all of them would looks so good in CG glory.  Batman, Superman, Flash etc looks so freaking awesome.  I’m not really into MMORPG (I think this is what the game will be).  If it looks exciting as the trailer, then I’ll be on board. The game comes out sometime before the holidays. One other thing, I think they should really just make all these comic book movies into all CG.  It just feels so much better.

Disruptive Design

They call themselves Bonsajo.  You might have recognized them before.  They were the one’s who did that really cool music visualization that got a lot of hits from the design community.  This time they created a new one for Wired.  Very cool concept.  It’s amazing how you can put a lot of simple things together and create something really great.  The only downside to this video is that it’s just not long enough.

After seeing this movie, I think people will be surprised by it.  The critics seems to be a little harsh on this movie.  If you look at the actual viewer ratings (rotten tomatoes), it’s actually in the mid 70’s %.   That should tell you something.   The movie has great special effects (hey street fighter take notes).  There are some corny moments, but there are some great moments as well.  There’s a little scene where it is inspired by Beauty and the Beast.  A little homage to the classic.

As far as story goes it’s pretty generic.  I”ll kind of go and say it’s very similar to the first Percy Jackson movie, but with a teacher student aspect.  I thought the pacing of the movie was done well too.  There wasn’t a scene that was too slow that lost my attention.  For the 90 minutes of  the movie I saw, it kept me interested.  Also for the soundtrack, they should really stop using mainstream music in it.  It really makes a movie dated fast.  This movie may not be for the critical, but for those that go to the movies for enjoyment.

The Transformers crew has now closed off half of Chicago’s North Michigan Avenue. It seems like every tourist and local shoppers were out tonight just watching the crew set up the street for the weekend shoot. Crashed cars are being set up throughout the street. All the movie props were being stored at the vacant lot south of the AMC River East theaters. It’s pretty unbelievable that Michigan Avenue is closed for the weekend as it’s the most busiest/crowded street in all of downtown. The movie studios must have paid millions to close down the retail stores.
