Rob Zombie's
Halloween II came out this week and unfortunately for me, I saw it. I thought Zombie’s first Halloween was pretty good for a remake. The first movie did a good job of trying to flesh out the Michael Myers character by showing how the character's past experiences essentially contributed to his future actions.
Zombie's Halloween II doesn't really add anything to his first film. Apparently, Myers survives the bullet shot he took at the end of the first film and escapes from a crashed ambulance that was supposed to take his "dead" body to the morgue. However, in the first few minutes of Halloween II, this sequence was described as a dream sequence which makes it unclear if this event really happened. All we and the characters in the movie really know is that Myers body disappeared.
Fast forward a year later and we see Myers' little sister now living with her best friend's family. For some reason, the happy-go-lucky suburbia found in the old 80's horror films are now a poor-looking suburbia where most teenagers don't wear deodorant and just listens to screamo-hard-punk or acid rock music all day. Even the sheriff looks like a bum now with his greasy and longer than Fabio hair due. There are no hot chicks or ken-doll guys for Myers to slaughter in this movie. Instead, he kills beer guzzling hillbillies and fat strip joint owners. The look of this film looks subpar compared to Zombie's first Halloween looking more like a cheesy artsy experimental film instead of the polished look that Zombie utilized in his first movie.
There are no characters to like or hate in this film. Grown-up Myers now just dreams of white horses and we are shown that his dreams of his mother are the reason for his continued pursuit of chaos. I think it's not a good enough reason and the white horse with white fairy ladies prancing around on screen looks lame and reminds us of
Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th. The element of supernatural evil is gone and Myers now looks like a giant drifter with long hair. Even little Myers doesn’t look as evil as in the first film. Loomis is now a diva novel writer and we really don't root or care what happens to him. The little sister is just there and the acting for the character is bad which makes the audience annoyed every time we see the character cry or complain. There’s one good thing in the end when we are fairly certain we won't see these characters again, at least in Zombie’s interpretation.
