Sony was nice enough to sell us a brand new PS3 Slim. Special thanks to our local Best Buy for providing a nice venue for us to purchase our system. Kudos for Chicago's CTA El Train for providing the transportation for a nominal fee. That's right, we here at Renderphase work for our toys! I'm not a really hardcore gamer, but I wanted a new blu-ray/DVD player, so I went ahead and bought the new PS3 Slim (slim is not the real name, but that's what everyone calls it). All I can say is this thing rocks! The console itself looks plaino-jane-o. I wish they had integrated the old PS3's shiny shell into this smaller unit. The only glossy part is the eject/power button area, which is somewhat a bad design choice since it can easily get crappy looking if you've been eating cheetos all day and you press the power button with your cheesy fingers. Packaging is pretty basic with only card board protecting the system. You get one controller, one USB cable, power cord, rca cord, demo blu-ray disc and the manual. Get an HDMI cable if your TV supports it as it makes setup a breeze. Street Fighter 4 and Batman Arkham Asylum really show off the graphic powers of the system. If you've stored your CD/DVD collection in your personal computer, make sure to download the open source program PS3MediaServer, so that you can play all your music/videos through your home theater setup. If you're looking for a game system or a blu-ray/dvd player that can stream content off your personal computer, get the PS3! Here are some re-boxing pictures for your interest:
